RIO DE JANEIRO, August 9th 2016 – Revered American actor, singer and social activist Harry Belafonte will weigh in at the evening showcase and presentation of the ArtsGames, Thursday, August 11th, at the Rio Media Center. His message to the gathered artists and audience will speak the power of the arts to change perceptions and inspire social advance.

Launching the first multidisciplinary nation vs nation medaled arts competitions, the ArtsGames’ objective is to aggregate the top arts competitions in the world. It will provide a global platform upon which the world’s greatest artists and entertainers will attempt to elevate their nations to the highest step on the podium in five different art forms: dance, media arts, visual arts, literature and music. The head office of the ArtsGames is in Montreal, which will be the host city of the inaugural 2018 edition.

Founded by two-time Olympian and former competitive classical pianist Sylvia Sweeney, the ArtsGames was inspired by her uncle, the late great jazz pianist Oscar Peterson, whose dream was to see an event that would bring together top artists throughout the world.

An elder statesman and advisor to the ArtsGames, Harry Belafonte is well suited to speak the power of the arts to change perceptions. Mr. Belafonte, whose “Banana Boat Song” (“Day-O”) was the first million seller recording and he became an icon of social change in the U.S. when he leveraged his celebrity and that of other artists to bring attention to the Civil Rights Movement. Similarly, the mission of the ArtsGames is to use the power of the arts to demonstrate the excellence that exists in all cultures.

Here is the message from Mr. Belafonte:
